Chemical Peels - Are They For You?

If you are considering a chemical peel with or without an accompanying facelift, then this article is for you.  Chemical peels are not as well known as their cousins in the field of dermatology.  There are three types of chemical peels available.  They are based on the aggressiveness of the chemical used in the process. A chemical peel is mainly a cosmetic procedure.  It may also enhance your self confidence.

The first types of chemical peels are known as AHA’s (Alphahydroxy acid).  This is the lightest of the chemical peels available.  This process will give a brightening to the skin as well as smooth out fine wrinkles and even help some acne.  It is a process treatment, meaning that it can be repeated until you or your doctor decides that the desired result has been reached.  This acid can be lightened in strength so that it can be mixed with a lotion to be applied at home.  You and your dermatologist will determine if this is necessary for you.  Side effects of this chemical peel are irritation and skin redness and sometimes some crusting.  These effects subside relatively quickly.

The next type of chemical peel is known as TCA’s (Trichloroacetic acid).  These are used for medium depth peels that are more aggressive to surface blemishes and wrinkles.  While the acid can be mixed to varying strengths, it is usually used the most often for this kind of chemical peel.  Multiple visits may be necessary and there is a short recovery time between visits as well.  Side effects of this chemical peel are possible unintended color changes to the skin pigment.  Avoid exposure to the sun for several months afterwards as well.

The last, and most aggressive, of the chemical peel treatments is known as the Phenol.  This is used to treat coarse facial wrinkles as well as damaged skin and pre-cancerous growths.  This chemical peel may damage the skin pigments so that tanning is not a possibility.  Protection from the sun will always be necessary.  This chemical peel poses a risk for those with heart disease so a checkup will be necessary first.  This chemical peel is only used on the facial area as scarring may result anywhere else.

While the chemical peel may not be for everybody, it may be a good option for your particular case.  The determination as to whether or not a chemical peel is right for you is between you and your dermatologist.
