The Benefits of Multivitamins

The benefits of multivitamins are well documented.  But it is easy to be overwhelmed by the choices offered in today’s market.  A good starting place for a choice of multivitamin is your specific need.  For example, are you over fifty?  Sixty?  Then you need a multivitamin geared to the needs of age related issues.  Do you live a stressful lifestyle?  Then the benefits of multivitamins that address stress depletion are for you.  Other groups are female, pregnant and certain chronic conditions may dictate the multivitamin that’s best for you.

Over fifty groups will want the benefits of multivitamins that are rich in antioxidants.  These antioxidants help the immune system to battle the free radicals in your body that are associated with the effects of aging.  You may also want to consider a multivitamin that contains vitamin B-12 since older people are often deficient in this vitamin.  People with diabetes are often deficient in antioxidants as well while sufferers of heart disease will want to increase intake of vitamin B-6 and folic acid.  The benefits of multivitamins are endless.

The foods we eat today are notoriously deficient in natural occurring vitamins and minerals.  Mass produced and chemically altered, foods today just don’t give us what we need to maintain a healthy system.  This is another area where the benefits of multivitamins are self evident.  Most people today take multivitamins for this reason alone.  Even pregnant women are advised in their first trimester to begin a regimen of multivitamins.  The stress of our daily lives combined with reduced vitamin intake make the benefits of multivitamins more important now than 50 years ago.

Disease can be specifically targeted by what are known as mega doses of multivitamins.  Osteoporosis is a well known example where vitamin D and calcium are concerned.  But did you know about the benefits of multivitamins for HIV?  Nearly every vitamin in the body is depleted by HIV and mega doses help to alleviate this.  Heart attack victims are often given a water pill to take.  This pill (furosimide) flushes away vitamins in the body as well.  A multivitamin addressing this need is a good idea.

In fact, the benefits of multivitamins are also apparent when it comes to prescription drugs.  Many drugs today interfere or outright get rid of vitamins in the body.  Checking with your doctor when obtaining a prescription is a good idea.  Then you can replace any vitamin deficiency with a targeted multivitamin.  The benefits of multivitamins are more numerous than can be listed here and so it is a good idea to talk to your pharmacist or doctor about the best choice for you.  Getting it right the first time will go a long way toward helping you to understand the benefits of multivitamins in your life.
